Learn to navigate conferences from start to end
When: Tuesday, 20 October 2026 12:00 PM-2:00 PM
Where: Andrew N. Liveris Building (46) – Room 914
Ever wondered what really happens after you submit a conference paper? Or how to make the most of the conference experience beyond simply presenting your research?
Bring a Plate, Bring a Friend — and Take a Break!
Join us for a relaxed lunch-and-learn session with Professor Shazia Sadiq, who will share practical insights on navigating the conference journey from start to end. Professor Sadiq brings a valuable perspective from both sides of the conference process — as a researcher and presenter, as well as a reviewer and someone involved in numerous academic conferences.
We’ll explore topics including:
- Preparing and submitting your research
- What happens during the peer-review process
- Understanding and responding to reviewer feedback
- Preparing for your conference presentation
- Networking and making meaningful connections
- Getting the most out of attending conferences
- Practical tips and lessons from experience
Whether you’re preparing for your first conference or already have a few under your belt, this is an opportunity to learn from an experienced researcher, ask questions, and gain insights that aren’t always covered in the PhD handbook.
Bring a plate: Optional — feel free to bring something to share, but no pressure!
Bring a friend: Also optional — we’d love to see you there!
We hope you can join us for some good food, good conversations, and practical conference wisdom!

Why Professor Shazia Sadiq?

Professor Shazia Sadiq brings a unique perspective to this session, having extensive experience publishing, reviewing research, and being involved in academic conferences.
She has experienced the conference process from both sides – as a researcher submitting and presenting work, and as a reviewer assessing research submitted to conferences. This makes her well placed to share practical insights into what happens behind the scenes and what researchers can do to navigate the process more effectively.
You’ll have the opportunity to learn from her experience, ask questions, and gain practical tips for your own conference journey — from submission and peer review through to presenting, networking, and beyond.
