The Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on Data Science Work

Speaker: Jorge Retamales

Abstract: Over the last two years, research on GenAI has exploded, including its implications for professionals, organisations and society. This research proposal seeks to understand how Generative AI (GenAI) is transforming data science work through three interconnected studies. The first study aims to explore data scientists’ attitudes towards GenAI and identify key challenges and benefits through a mixed-method approach  (e.g., analysing Reddit data science conversations and directly collecting data from data scientists through exploratory surveys and interviews). The second study will use a randomised controlled trial to compare the effectiveness and efficiency of human-human versus human-GenAI pairings in collaborative tasks, considering variables like task complexity and expertise levels. The third study will employ a case study approach to understand how data scientists adapt their collaborative practices when integrating GenAI into their workflows. Together, these studies aim to contribute to a better understanding of the impact of GenAI not just for data scientists but extensively for knowledge workers, offering relevant insights to enhance productivity, collaboration, and socio-technical concerns.
