Gaole He was a visiting researcher to CIRES from February to April 2024 hosted by CIRES CI Professor Gianluca Demartini at The University of Queensland (UQ). His research project explored how large language models (LLMs) can collaborate with humans to boost work efficiency and optimize workflow. Gaole is a PhD candidate in the Software Technology Department, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, supervised by Assistant Professor Ujwal Gadiraju. His visit was also supported by Delft University of Technology.
From this collaboration, the team had a paper accepted at the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Conference on Human Factors In Computing Systems (CHI) 2025, which is the premier international conference of Human-Computer Interaction.

“Working at CIRES and UQ as a visiting PhD researcher is a great experience. During the visit, I mainly worked with Dr. Gianluca Demartini and his group, and my interactions with fellow researchers from diverse backgrounds really broadened my perspective. At the same time, I got to know more about how UQ researchers conduct their research, serving as an innovative learning experience. CIRES also provided engaging seminars, workshops, and discussions, which enriched my understanding about the broad topics of data and computation.
Beyond the research, I enjoyed the vibrant living environment at UQ, beginning each day with a peaceful walk by the beautiful UQ lakes, full of wildlife and beautiful trees. Brisbane’s warm climate and abundant sunshine make the campus swimming pool especially inviting. Exploring the local culture and forming lasting friendships added a wonderful personal dimension to my stay.”
