The CIRES Affiliates Program is a membership scheme for the Centre and is designed to build the Centre’s network of collaborators and researchers including research students who have an interest in or alignment to the Centre’s research program and information resilience.
CIRES Affiliates are not formalised members of the Centre’s agreement, however they may be based at the Centre nodes of The University of Queensland and Swinburne University of Technology, and at other institutions and organisations nationally and internationally.
Their research and engagement activity may be showcased through the Centre and included in the Centre’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and reporting to the Australian Research Council.
Eligibility to become a CIRES Affiliate
There are two categories of membership.
- Affiliate Investigators
Affiliate Investigators are connected to the Centre through one or more of the following:
- Co-advisors of Centre funded students.
- Former Centre members (including Chief Investigators, Partner Investigators, or other research staff) that will be continuing their connection with the Centre in their new role or institution but not as a named participant on the Centre agreement. This is an automatic process and will be communicated to the member as part of their off-boarding process from their Centre role.
- Researchers at UQ or Swinburne who are providing in-kind support or contributions to Centre projects but do not wish to be a named participant on the Centre agreement.
- Centre members may nominate colleagues and collaborators as Affiliate Investigators from any organisation or institution for review and approval by the Centre Director.
2. Affiliate Students
Affiliate Students are connected to the Centre through one or more of the following:
- Any current PhD student supervised by a CIRES Chief Investigator, with a project related to Information Resilience.
- Masters or Honours students undertaking a student project or research internship with a CIRES Chief Investigator.
- Domestic or International Student visitors to the Centre, including participants in the CIRES Visiting Student Scheme.
- Centre members may nominate students from any organisation or institution as Affiliate Students for review and approval by the Centre Director.

Affiliate Investigators
- Invitations to Centre events including partner workshops, annual Information Resilience Symposium, annual Information Resilience PhD School.
- Opportunity to participate in Centre initiatives or collaboration activity including workshops with CIRES Partner Organisations or invited speaker at Centre events.
- Affiliate Investigators can have their work promoted via the Centre’s network, social media channels, and will also be profiled on the Centre’s website.
- Access to Amazon Web Services (AWS) training opportunities and potentially cloud computing credits
Affiliate Students
- Invitations to Centre events including partner workshops, research training program, and annual Information Resilience PhD School.
- Potential funding support including competitive funding (e.g., travel grants, sponsorship to travel to/attend the Information Resilience PhD School).
- Potential to work with the Centre’s Partner Organisations including placement time.
- Access and use of the CIRES Headquarters space at UQ, this may include the use of a hot desk.
- Affiliate Students can have their work promoted via the Centre’s network, social media channels, and will also be profiled on the Centre’s website.
- Access to Amazon Web Services (AWS) training opportunities and potentially cloud computing credits
Process
Nominations are received on an ongoing basis and should be sent via email to cires@uq.edu.au with the subject “CIRES Affiliates Program nomination: <Name>” and include a brief overview of the person’s research focus, expertise and articulating their current or potential link to the Centre’s research program.
Candidates will be reviewed by the Centre Director and an email outcome sent within 2 weeks of the nomination. New affiliates will be added to the Centre website and announced on the CIRES LinkedIn page.
