Australia’s AI Challenge is Harnessing our Capabilities

Australia doesn’t just need to adopt AI — it needs to build the capability to shape it.

In the latest article from CEDA – Committee for Economic Development of Australia, CIRES Centre Director, Professor Shazia Sadiq, looks at how Australia can turn its research strengths and specialist expertise into practical AI capability.

From more energy-efficient computing to applications across health, science and industry, the opportunity is not simply to use AI better, but to build more of the capability here.

“It is a privilege to work alongside amazing AI researchers at The University of Queensland. Australia is among the world leaders in AI research publications and PhD outcomes. CIRES CI A/Prof Rocky Chen – ARC Future Fellowship 2026

A huge congratulations to CIRES Chief Investigator Associate Professor Rocky Chen from the UQ School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science on being awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowship.

Yesterday, the ARC announced its largest-ever Future Fellowships round, investing more than $344 million in over 290 research projects, including work addressing the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence.

Rocky’s project will address unfairness inherent in the personalisation algorithms that underpin online services and recommender systems, particularly for marginalised user groups. The research will advance new approaches to fair, transparent and accurate personalised predictions via knowledge-grounded reasoning and bias-aware optimisation. It aims to address an important digital equity challenge and strengthen Australia’s leadership in developing trustworthy and socially responsible artificial intelligence solutions.

Congratulations Rocky!
